Walter Helbig (Saxony, 9 April 1878 - Ascona, 26 March 1968) was a German painter and graphic designer. In 1895 he began studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he met Carl Bantzer, Otto Gussmann and Otto Mueller. From 1897 to 1899 he took a trip to Italy where he met Arnold Bocklin, Adolf von Hildebrand and Otto Mueller. In 1910 he moved to Switzerland, where he met Hans Arp and Oscar Luthy. Helbig participated in the first exhibition of the "Modern Federation" in 1911 in Lucerne in which several artists of the Der Blaue Reiter also participated. Helbig held his first major solo exhibition in Zurich in 1948 and in 1952 he became a member of the Deutscher Kunsterbund. Following the second world war approaches abstract expressionism and then arrives at the informal art of the sixties. .
