Michael Herr was born in Metzingen in 1591 and is thought to have received his artistic training in Stuttgart between 1605 and 1609. He is believed to have studied under Georg Donauer, the court painter, before moving to Nuremberg in 1610. He traveled to Rome and Venice in 1614-15, Herr was deeply impressed by the works of contemporary Italian artists such as the Carraccis, Guido Reni, and Jacopo Palma the Younger. Herr finally returned to Nuremberg in 1618 or 1619, and soon acquired his prominent position as one of the city's great artists, thanks to his ability to produce historical, religious, and mythological paintings, as well as epitaphs and portraits commissioned by various personalities. One of Herr's favorite subjects was that of soldiers in their daily lives, a subject he studied firsthand when Swedish troops besieged Nuremberg in 1632. Michael Herr died in Nuremberg in 1661.
