Knut Hesterberg Biography

Knut Hesterberg (1941- 2016) was a German sculptor and furniture designer. Growing up as the son of master foundryman Werner Hesterberg in Maulburg, after graduating from high school, he first served an apprenticeship in his parents' metal foundry and then attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel. He was a student of the architect and artist Max Bill; since 1965 he has been a pupil and collaborator of the sculptor Mary Vieira (São Paulo). Two years later he founded the free and applied form studio in Maulburg. His numerous exhibitions have taken him to Basel, Munich and Milan, among other places. In 1984 the artist moved to Provence. His constructivist sculptures are or were in public buildings and squares in Lörrach, Schopfheim, Steinen and Maulburg. The artist realized his intuitive ideas in sculptural representations, in compact bodies or in rhythmically rotating surfaces. In many of his works, Hesterberg saw staticity as a "momentary phase of dynamics". He wanted the changes to be understood as a “function of permanence”.
