Ando Hiroshige, also known as Utagawa Hiroshige, was born in 1797 in Edo, Japan. Since he was a child, Hiroshige had a passion for drawing and therefore worked as an apprentice to the master Utagawa Toyohiro, who taught the Ukiyo-e style, a genre of Japanese art print made on wooden blocks. In accordance with local customs, Hiroshige took the name Utagawa Hiroshige. Around 1830, Hiroshige began to create a series of works under the influence of the great Hokusai, who made him famous with titles such as "Eight Visits of Omi", "Famous Places of the Eastern Capital" and especially "The 53 Stations of the Tokaido ". Hiroshige was very skilled at landscape prints and the making of Kacho-e, showing birds and flowers. He was an undisputed master for the poetry with which he permeated his work, and is still considered the most beloved of Japanese artists today. Hiroshige died in 1858.
