Hans Hoffmann Biography

Hans Hoffmann-Ybbs (1928 – 2005) was one of the most important painters in Austria. Born in 1928 in Ybbs an der Donau/Lower Austria, after completing his education at the Federal Institute for Graphic Education and Research in Vienna, he moved to Wels in Upper Austria and began working as a graphic designer. However, he soon decided to work as an artist. In the early 1950s he met his life partner, Charlotte Buck-Rachette. With the move to Schloss Parz near Grieskirchen in 1962, a new and decisive phase in the artist's life began. The castle remained his place of residence and work until his death on 30 August 2005. The artist's first verified exhibition was Oberösterreich Avantgarde 1900 - 1990 at the Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz in Linz in 1990, and the most recent exhibition was Unter Tausend at Galerie Schloss Parz in Grieskirchen in 2021. Hans Hoffmann-Ybbs is exhibited most frequently in Austria, but has also had exhibitions in the United States, Germany and elsewhere. Other exhibitions worth mentioning were at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and at the Listasafn Reykjavikur - Reykjavík Art Museum in Reykjavik. Hoffmann-Ybbs' art is in at least two museum collections, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville (MOCA) in Jacksonville, FL and at Galerie Schloss Parz in Grieskirchen.
