Gino Hollander (1924 – 2005) was an American painter best known for abstract depictions of the human figure, landscapes and bulls. In a bold, fluid style similar to the work of Franz Kline, Hollander's paintings were calligraphic in their energetic markmaking. He was born on August 4, 1924, in Newark, NJ, and attended Rutgers University before serving in the ski troop of the Mountain Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. Hollander had a successful career as a documentary filmmaker throughout the 1950s. In 1960, he decided to focus on painting after befriending abstract expressionist painters at the Cedar Tavern. He died at the age of 91 on August 27, 2015 in Newport Beach, California. Today, Hollander's works are held in the collections of the Bristol City Museum, the Aspen Art Museum, and the City College of New York, among others.
