Josip Horvat Biography
Josip Horvat (1939 – 1981) is a Croatian artist, who, starting as a craftsman, discovered the art of painting only in adulthood. Since 1956, glass painting has become his main occupation. He began exhibiting in 1963, but became popular among the public after the second half of the 1960s. Joska belongs to the naive Croatian current that refers to the "Hlebine School"; in it, which brings together the greatest exponents of this particular pictorial style, a tradition continues which is the soul and culture of this people. Their paintings portray the realities close to them, which are mainly peasant or popular realities. The group includes, among others, the Croatian artists Ivan Generalić, Franjo Mraz, Mirko Virius, Franjo Filipovic, Dragan Gazi, Josip Generalić, Mijo Kovacić , Martin Mehkek, Dusan Fabic, Franjo Poljak and Ivan Vecenaj.
