Edouard Hostein (1804 - 1889) was one of the best landscape painters of the mid-19th century.
A painter linked to classicism, he is very attentive to details and atmospheric rendering, without neglecting the picturesque, with an excellent panoramic sense.
He devoted himself to nature portraits, starting with a specialization in lithography, collaborating with Baron Taylor on views of the Auvergne, Normandy and the Paris region.
A traveling artist, he spent time in the Ardennes, Alsace and Germany in the second half of the 1930s, before discovering Italy, where he was fascinated by ancient ruins and evocative landscapes such as Tivoli, which he portrayed in great detail . Upon his return, he settled for a long time in France and in particular in the Lyon region, making occasional trips to the Paris region, Nantes or Normandy.
He regularly exhibited his works until the first half of the 19th century.
