Charles-francois Hutin Biography

Charles François Hutin (1715 - 1776) was a French painter, printmaker and sculptor specializing in history paintings and portraits.
Born in Paris in 1715, Hutin studied painting under François Le Moine. At the age of twenty-one he won first prize for history painting, and moved to Rome for seven years, where he studied sculpture with René-Michel Slodtz. Returning to Paris in 1746, he was welcomed into the Royal Academy.
His work created for admission to the Academy attracted the attention of the Elector of Saxony, who invited him to Dresden in 1748 together with his brother Pierre Hutin. Charles and Pierre Hutin copied the Dresden gallery canvases, which were published in two volumes entitled 'Dresde Gallery' (1753-1757).
In 1764, Hutin became the director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, where he created a work of art for the altar of the Catholic Hofkirche church in Dresden, depicting the crucifixion, and a fresco on the ceiling of a of the chapels located behind the main altar.
Hutin published his graphic works in 35 plates under the title "Recueil de différents sujets composés et gravés par Charles Hutin à Dresden" in Dresden in 1763.
Hutin died in Dresden on 29 July 1776.
