Marcus Jansen Biography
Marcus Jansen (1968 - ) Born in New York in 1968, Marcus Jansen creates powerful paintings that respond to his experiences growing up in the United States and Germany, as well as cultural and socio-political themes. His socially charged cityscape paintings are influenced by the two opposing worlds in which he grew up. Through his colorful and expressive brushwork, Jansen documents the human condition critically, socially and politically and invites the viewer to engage in reflection. His work challenges the traditional stylized rules that have governed the genre and creates a new form of portraiture by investigating structures of power and anonymity. Jansen has had solo exhibitions in museums internationally, including recently at the Museo della Triennale di Milano, Milan, the Zitadelle Museum in Berlin, the Baker Museum, Naples, FL, and the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, FL. He participated in the 12th International Biennial of Printing and Drawing in Taiwan at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art. Jansen's works are in the collections of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA), The University of Michigan Museum of Art, The New Britain Museum of American Art, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art, The Housatonic Museum of Art and Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC
