Paul Jones (1921-1997) born in Sydney, studied art at East Sydney Technical College and Julian Ashton Art School. He worked in a department store as a commercial artist before joining the army in 1941, where he spent some time in New Guinea. While on leave Jones painted a still life of flowers and included it in a Society of Artists exhibition, attracting the attention of Professor EG Waterhouse, a world authority on the study of camellias. Waterhouse then invited him to illustrate his two books on camellias, which launched Jones's career as a botanical artist. Jones received an OBE for his services to the arts in 1971, the same year his book Flora Superba was published. In 1976 he published another important work, Flora Magnifica. His paintings are widely held in museum collections and included in several interesting exhibitions linked below, at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the Smithsonian in Washington DC.
