Jorit Biography
Jorit, pseudonym of Ciro Cerullo, was born in Quarto on 24 November 1990 and is an Italian artist specialized in street art, mainly active in Naples. Jorit's work is characterized by profound realism and great technical mastery of the pictorial medium, accompanied by strong messages of a social nature. Since 2005, Jorit has made himself known through a series of graffiti carried out in Naples, in the northern suburbs and in the historic center. During this early period Jorit created numerous illegal paintings on walls and trains, frequenting train depots in several European countries, known as Yards. Furthermore, Jorit's pictorial activity is accompanied by constant political militancy, which allows him to come into contact with anti-globalization and social rights movements. Over the years, Jorit began to focus more and more on the realistic depiction of the human face, marked by two red stripes on the cheeks, to which African magical/healing rituals refer. In the murals created by Jorit, there are "hidden" writings, words and phrases that often broaden the meaning of the works. Jorit's notoriety, recognized by international critics such as Achille Bonito Oliva, led to the publication of university treatises on his artistic activity. Since 2008 he has held exhibitions at the MACRO in Rome, at the MAGMA Museum and at the PAN in Naples, as well as exhibiting in galleries in London, Berlin, Sydney and Rome.
