Juan de Sevilla Romero y Escalante was born in Granada in 1643 and died there on 23 August 1695. He was a Spanish Baroque painter. He began his apprenticeship with Francisco Alonso Argüello, a mediocre painter, and then completed it in the workshop of Pedro de Moya. Juan de Sevilla came into contact with some sketches of Rubens' fables where naked figures were represented, influencing his art in this direction. His fame grew rapidly thanks to numerous commissions for churches and convents in his city, particularly in 1661, painting together with Miguel Jerónimo de Cieza and Ambrosio Martínez de Bustos the decorations for Corpus Christi in the square of Bibarrambla. According to sources he died in Granada on 23 August 1695 and was buried in the parish church of San Miguel.
