Kaarina Kaikkonen (1952 - ) was born in Iisalmi, Finland, 1952 and lives and works in Helsinki. One of the most internationally recognized sculptors and artists, she is known for shaping urban landscapes and highlighting community through her installations. Kaikkonen studied at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts and received the National Visual Arts Prize in 1989, the Finland Prize of Art in 2001, and in 2013 the Order of the Lion of Finland awarded her Knight First Class. Kaikkonen has also received international awards such as the Audience Award at Den Haag Sculptuur in the Netherlands in 2004 and the Honorable Mention at the 11th Cairo Biennial in Egypt in 2009. References to current issues of humanity can be found in his works and basic needs that always exist regardless of environment or culture. The old clothes he uses in his production contain the presence of its former owner, and places the viewer in front of something new and unknown but at the same time extremely familiar and intimate. The impressive installations made from men's jackets and shirts are well known both in Finland and globally such as in the USA, Cuba, Canada, Japan and Great Britain. His first installation was exhibited in Helsinki in 1988. His pieces can be found in several collections such as the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, the Helsinki City Art Museum and the Espoo Museum of Modern Art by EMMA.
