Christopher Kautz Biography

The story of Christopher Kautz, and therefore indirectly of the objects he created, constitutes a mix of artistic and scientific aspirations, which have found fulfillment in the Cranewalk project, a line of home products and furniture made of natural, eco-sustainable and ethical materials . After earning his bachelor's degree in geology, Kautz was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to further study water systems in New Zealand. It is during this period that he comes into contact with the Maori artisan tradition, and here the American designer, between a study break and another dedicated to compiling geochemical data, realizes that art and science are actually not so distant: both require the same attention to detail and respect for precision.
From that moment, the step to decide to abandon the profession of scientist and embrace that of designer was short: considering wood as a vital, pulsating element, and approaching each of his creations as a unique object, the objects of Cranewalk, the result of a skillful fusion of ancient artisan techniques learned in the field and a strong inclination towards Japanese and European artisan traditions, naturally combined with the ingenuity typical of the American soul.
His creations seem to have a soul, similar to works with an almost totemic appearance.
