Kikoko Biography

KIKOKO, whose birth name is KOUEVI-AKOE EKOE KOKOVI, was born in 1978 in Lomé, Togo and currently resides in Milan. He discovered his passion for art during his school days and further developed his skills by meeting nomadic painters from the Algerian Tamanrasset desert. As a craftsman and sculptor, KIKOKO has participated in numerous projects focusing on social issues in countries such as Togo, Niger, Senegal, Ghana, Benin and other African nations as a painter. He arrived in Italy in 2006 after having exhibited his works in numerous exhibitions in France and Germany. His works are present in numerous public and private collections both in Italy and abroad. KIKOKO's artwork is distinguished by the use of various materials such as wood, fabric and paper. His mixed media was influenced by his sojourn in the Algerian desert, where paintings by nomadic artists would become grainy due to blowing sand, creating textured works. The theme often present in KIKOKO's artwork is the concept of travel. Just as many artists step out of their comfort zone and explore their minds, so too does KIKOKO, often metaphorically depicting journeys through her artwork. His paintings depict real figures that transform into symbols, and he sometimes incorporates proverbs or sayings from his culture that can take on different meanings depending on the viewer's interpretation. KIKOKO encourages contemplation and reflection on his art through the use of images.
