Ernst Paul Klee (Münchenbuchsee, 18 December 1879 – Muralto, 29 June 1940) was a Swiss painter of a German father and a Swiss mother, the former a musician and the latter a singer. An eminent figure of 20th century art, in the period of his training Paul Klee dealt with music, poetry, painting, finally choosing this last form of expression as a privileged area and thus starting one of the highest and most fruitful artistic experiences of the twentieth century. However, he also supported himself with the income derived from his activity as an instrumentalist at the Bern Orchestra. An exponent of abstractionism, he considered art a discourse on reality and not its simple reproduction. In his works reality is therefore rarefied, made essential, sometimes reduced to simple lines or colored backgrounds. His inexhaustible research is also manifested through the choice of supports, which range from traditional canvas to newspaper, jute and cardboard of every quality and thickness.
