Wilhelm Knoll (1839-1907) founded a leather upholstered furniture shop in Stuttgart, which he soon expanded as production began. In 1890, the company was awarded the title of official supplier to the royal court of Württemberg. The family company, which in the meantime proliferated in the opening of a second production site in Stammheim, the acquisition of a factory in Vienna, as well as the conclusion of a licensing agreement with a British manufacturer, was inherited by Wilhelm's sons, Wilhelm and Walter , in 1907.
