Archibald Knox, born on 9 April 1864 in Tromode, was an artist, draftsman and designer. He was the son of William Knox and began his school education at St. Barnabas Elementary School. Subsequently, he continued his studies at Douglas Grammar School and Douglas School of Art, developing a lasting interest in Celtic art. His creations for Liberty & Co. in London brought him some notoriety as a watercolourist, graphic designer and typographer, making him one of the most renowned names in the company. He was also responsible for the gravestone of the founder, Arthur Liberty. In 1897, Knox began teaching at the Redhill School of Art, where his friend Alfred James Collister held the position of director. He spent a year in the United States and, upon his return to Man, worked as a censor of letters from internees during the Great War. Once the conflict ended, he resumed his work as an art teacher at various schools on the island. Knox died of a heart attack in 1933.
