Joseph Anton Koch (Elbigenalp, 27 July 1768 – Rome, 12 January 1839) was an Austrian-German painter. Koch expressed himself above all through drawings and paintings. As regards style, his works are connected to the Neoclassicism of his teacher and friend Carstens; they also reflect a profound knowledge of Michelangelo's work, in particular in the representation of the human body and the nude, and of Annibale Carracci for landscapes. His works can be found in the most important European art galleries, e.g. in the Kunstmuseum in Basel, in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, in the Art Gallery of Dresden, in the Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck, in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen, in the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart. Thanks to its relations with King Louis I of Bavaria, the Neue Pinakothek in Munich possesses a particularly rich collection of Koch's works.
