Paul Kostabi Biography
Paul Kostabi was born in Whittier, California, in 1962. Paul began to tread the New York art scene at a very young age, in the early 1980s, at a time when "the Big Apple" was the world capital of contemporary art, thanks not only to to the figure of Andy Warhol, the absolute no. 1 in those years and a true tutelary deity of American art since the 1960s, but also to young artists of the caliber of Keith Haring, Julian Schnabel and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Paul approached the environment with paintings characterized by a gestural style and strong chromatic impact, with subjects ranging from self-portraits to landscapes, from still lifes to abstract compositions. His artistic language harks back to childhood and Dubuffet's Art Brut. Paul has an extensive exhibition history, the first exhibition dates back to 1983, but already in 1985 he exhibited at Ronald Feldman, the most important gallery in NY at the time, in 1991 at Carnegie Hall and until 2000 in prestigious galleries again in the USA. In 2002 the first exhibition in Europe and since then a long series of exhibitions all over the world, in prestigious public and private places. He is also a successful musician, having founded several musical groups, including Youth Gone Mad, White Zombie and Psychotica. Paul has collaborated with Dee Dee Ramone on a series of paintings exhibited in galleries around the world. He is currently represented by the Piero Della Francesca Art Gallery in Arezzo, which mainly deals with his large-format works.
