Louis Kuppenheim Biography
Louis Kuppenheim (1824-1889) was an artist who specialized in gold and silver artifacts. He opened his workshop on Altstädter Straße in Pforzheim, Germany, in 1857. Here they mainly concentrated on the production of cases, bags and sophisticated jewelry designs. They moved throughout Germany several times over the years, and in 1900 Louis Kuppenheim opened an atelier in Paris.
He also produced pieces for other houses, especially Cartier, specializing in cases and accessories for smokers. In 1889, when Louis died, his sons Hugo, Moritz and Albert took over the family business. The family decided to honor Louis' legacy and retained the company's branding as Louis Kuppenheim.
At the Universal Exposition of 1900 the company obtained the gold medal thanks to a letter opener. In the same year, the company opened a branch at 67 Rue Richelieu in Paris. During these years, various designs were created, including delicately enamelled cigarette cases, by Hans Christiansen. The gold and silver creations were characterized by the highest quality enamel and were enriched with gems.
