(Tokyo 1934 - 1991). One of the most refined and influential designers of modern Japan. His works are the result of a balanced equilibrium. A perfect synthesis between the delicate finesse of Japanese decorative arts and the need for simplicity and structural purity typical of modernity. Since 1965, the year the Kuramata Design Office in Tokyo was founded, it has given design lovers priceless pieces in terms of expressive value and longevity. He was able to create objects and furniture of great lightness, which seem to float in the air and play with light. His production made in Japan is vast. Various materials are used to free oneself from the effect of gravity: glass, aluminium, steel mesh. An admirer of Ettore Sottsass, Shiro Kuramata came into contact with Italian design through the Memphis group. In 1987 the Italian company Cappellini made him the leading designer for his arrival on the international scene. His furnishings, still extremely current, are present in the permanent collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, the MoMA in New York, the Metropolitan Museum, the Vitra Design Museum and the Toyama Museum of Modern Art.
