Kisho Kurokawa, born in 1934 in Kanie, Japan, was a famous architect and one of the founders of the Metabolist movement in the 1960s. After studying at the University of Tokyo under Kenzo Tange, Kurokawa helped create the Metabolist movement alongside other architects such as Kiyonori Kikutake and Fumihiko Maki. Throughout his career, Kurokawa took a philosophical rather than engineering approach to architecture. Kurokawa's observation regarding the fragility of Japanese construction, combined with the frequency of natural disasters, led to the realization of new ideas about construction. An example of such an approach is the Nakagin Capsule Tower, a building composed of prefabricated micro-apartments called "capsules", which can be added or replaced during the life of the building. In 2007, Kurokawa founded the Kisho Kurokawa Green Institute and ran for governor of Tokyo, also helping to found the Green Party in Japan. Kurokawa died in 2007 in Tokyo.
