Giovanni La Cognata was born in Comiso (Ragusa) on 27 July 1954. After studying at the Comiso Art Institute he dedicated himself to painting. The first collective exhibition was in 1978, while the first solo exhibition opened two years later. At the beginning his work was dedicated to portraits, but he soon turned his attention to landscapes which, together with figurative paintings, would be fundamental in his poetic and stylistic growth. Important for his education was his decision in the early 1980s to move to Milan where he would find greater contacts and opportunities in making his work known to critics and galleries. In 1999 he exhibited at the collective exhibition Opere Insieme '99, set up at Palazzo Mormino of Donnafugata. In 2000 the first exhibitions abroad at the Albemarle Gallery in London and at the Galerie Prom in Munich. Since 2001 he has participated in numerous exhibitions in institutional places such as in 2004 at the Gallery of Modern Art in Catania with the Scicli Group Among the latest solo exhibitions: Galleria 61 in Palermo (2003), Galleria Davico in Turin (2004), Galleria Forni in Bologna (2005), Galleria Tonelli in Brescia (2006), Palazzo Ducale in Sabbioneta (2007) and Galleria Forni in Milan (2008). He lives with his wife Irene and daughter Giulia in Comiso.
