Eugeni Alexandrovich Lanceray Biography
Yevgeny (or Eugene) Lanceray was a Russian animal sculptor, born on August 12, 1848 in Morchansk, Tambov.
Lanceray came from a French family that settled in Russia. His grandfather, the major of Napoleon I's army, Paul Lanceray, had naturalized in Russia.
The young Lanceray developed a great passion for the representation of horses, studying sculpture at the St. Petersburg high school with the well-known animal sculptor Nikolai Lieberich, who specialized in the representation of horses and riders. He was considered one of the greatest Russian sculptors of his time and his work focused mainly on horses and their relationship with man. During his short creative career, he sculpted over 400 equestrian figurines, always looking for new motifs, annually visiting Europe and Asiatic Russia, as well as Algeria in 1883.
Lanceray's works are exhibited in numerous venues, including the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. He also exhibits twice in Paris and his sculptures were created by the Art Susse foundry. He died prematurely at just 38 years old.
