Christian Lapie Biography

Christian Lapie (1955 - ) was born in 1955 in France, in Val-de-Vesle in the Champagne-Ardenne region. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Reims 1972-1977 and at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris between 1977 and 1979. At first a painter, he worked with plaster, oxides, ashes, then his techniques and materials evolved. Marries sheet metal, concrete and limed wood. He found his true artistic expression after a founding experience in 1992. Now an established artist, he was invited to participate in a collective exhibition at the modern art museum in Rio de Janeiro. During this event he feels the need to search for a universal language. Immersed in the Amazon forest for a creative stay, his desire to work on monumental works becomes clear to him. Upon his return to France he began to look at spaces with a different sensitivity. It asks how to bring out places of memory, how to create new public spaces to support dialogue between inhabitants. Christian Lapie's work questions our individual and collective memory. His installations of ghostly figures arise from chosen places, steeped in history. Whatever the continent, these faceless, monumental and powerful figures question and destabilize. Christian Lapie's works are installed in many places around the world including the Echigo Tsumari Sculpture Park in Japan; Castle Park in Canada; the Central Park of Jaipur in India; the Solomon Alex Foundation in France; and in many private collections in Europe and the United States.
