Henri Laurens Biography

Henri Laurens was born on 18 February 1885 in Paris and began attending drawing courses there. Later, he decided to devote himself to sculpture and created works inspired by the influence of Auguste Rodin. In 1911 he became friends with Georges Braque, who introduced him to Cubism. Laurens was active in the current until 1925, and created polychrome bas-reliefs which represent the transposition of Cubist pictorial research. In 1913 he participated for the first time in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. Just two years later, Laurens met artists such as Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris and Amedeo Modigliani, and became friends with Pierre Reverdy, illustrating his Poèmes en prose. In the 1920s he also dedicated himself to architectural and set design projects. In 1948 and 1950 he participated in the Venice Biennale, while in 1949 the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels dedicated a large anthology to him, and the Museo National d'Art Moderne in Paris did the same the following year. In 1952, the University of Caracas commissioned him to create a monumental sculpture. Finally, Henri Laurens died on May 5, 1954 in Paris.
