George Lautner Biography

Georges Lautner (1926 - 2013) Always part of the Pantheon of great French directors, Lautner was born in 1926 in Nice. He leaves his city of origin for Paris where he begins his career in the world of cinema as a decorator and projectionist. He first became assistant director to Sacha Guitry on the set of Le Trésor de Cantenac. His reputation precedes him on the set: he is known for being extraordinarily efficient and for having an excellent relationship with the actors. Alongside his jobs as a technician, he began making some appearances in feature films. Maurice Juven entrusted him with the production of La môme aux buttons, in 1958. However, it was his second production Marche ou crève that confirmed Lautner in his new status as a recognized director, and he thus had the opportunity to surround himself with key personalities such as Paul Meurisse or Bernard Blier. His very personal shooting techniques made him popular with Alain Poiré, boss of Gaumont, who in 1963 entrusted him with the production of the cult film Les tontons flingueurs. He then directed the films Le Pacha with Jean Gabin and Laisse aller, c'est une valse with Jean Yanne. During the 70s and 80s, he multiplied his successes, always surrounding himself with the best actors such as the young Miou-Miou or even Gérard Lanvin.
