Eustache Le Sueur Biography

Eustache Le Sueur was born in Paris in 1617. From a young age, at just sixteen, he was introduced to the studio of the renowned painter Simon Vouet, who entrusted him with the important commission of creating eight compositions taken from the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili for the Gobelins tapestries in 1642. Known for his religious paintings characteristic of the French Baroque style, Le Sueur was one of the founders and first professors of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. Initially he achieved success thanks to the creation of tapestry paintings, but his fame was consolidated with the creation of a series of decorations for the Lambert Palace, even if these remained unfinished. He also created numerous paintings for churches and convents. In Le Sueur's works we can see the stylistic influence of artists of the caliber of Nicolas Poussin, Raphael and Vouet. Le Sueur is considered the "French Raphael", like Nicolas Poussin and Charles Le Brun. Unfortunately, many of his works have been lost or poorly preserved. The painter died in Paris on 30 April 1655.
