Charles Léandre was born on 22 July 1862 in Champsecret and came from a family of illustrators. At 16, the young man moved to Paris to study painting in Émile Bin's studio. Subsequently, at the age of 21, he enrolled in the School of Fine Arts and attended the class of Alexandre Cabanel who recognized him as one of the most talented of his generation. Under Cabanel's guidance, Léandre became passionate about history painting. His official debut at the Salon des Artistes français took place in 1887. During his stay in the French capital, Léandre frequented Rodolphe Salis and his famous Chat noir. At the same time, he collaborated successfully with the satirical magazine «Le Rire», creating almost five hundred covers. In addition, he painted posters for exhibitions, shows and trade. During the First World War, Léandre engaged in the creation of patriotic posters. Charles Léandre died in Montmartre on 4 May 1934.
