Charles Le Brun was born in Paris in 1619 and received his first artistic training in the workshop of Simon Vouet. At 23 he moved to Rome to study Italian painting, where he took Raphael as a model and frequented the studio of Nicolas Poussin. Le Brun was a renowned portrait painter and a very productive draftsman. In 1662 he was appointed "First Painter of the King" and received a noble recognition and prebends. In 1663, the minister Colbert appointed Charles Le Brun director of the Manufacture Royale de Tapisserie des Gobelins, the upholstery fabric factory which over the centuries reached its maximum splendor thanks to the imagination of Le Brun, who introduced bucolic, pastoral and country motifs typical of late baroque and rococo mannerism. Charles Le Brun died on 12 February 1690 in Paris.
