Gian Franco Legler Biography

Gian Franco Legler (1922 - 2015) was a Swiss-Italian industrial designer. Born in 1922 in Locate, Italy, Swiss nationality. At the time, there was no adequate training in Switzerland to enable Gian Franco Legler to realize his ambition of being an industrial designer and producing his own creations. Thus he studied architecture at the ETH in Zurich and for another three quarters he studied machine design and tool production here; followed by a year of plastic and fiber technology at MIT in Boston and then SOM Architects for practical training. In Chicago, a stronghold of industrial design, he works for Reinecke Design Associates. In 1957 he founded Design and Development Associates with J. Hunt. Returning to Zurich in 1961, he opened the Legler studio «Design, Architecture and Interior-design» and continued working as a designer until 2007. Legler is the designer of the 1951 Basket Chair which was designed in 1951 for the Italian restaurant The Basket. This comfortable stacking chair received the "Good Design Award" in 1953 from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
