Sir Peter Lely, born 14 September 1618 in Soest and died 30 November 1680 in London, was a famous Dutch painter who spent much of his life and career in England. After studying art in Haarlem and apprenticing with the painter Pieter de Grebber, Lely moved to England in 1641. His early paintings were inspired by artists such as van Dyck and Flemish Baroque, and were characterized by religious or mythological. Later, Lely also proved himself an excellent portraitist, working for the court and aristocracy, creating official portraits, such as the portrait of Charles I. Lely also worked for Oliver Cromwell and his son Richard, and after the restoration of Charles II Stuart , became the court painter. At the end of his brilliant career, Lely died in London on 30 November 1680.
