Yves Lemoine Biography

Yves Lemoine, born in 1898 in Rennes, is known as the city's municipal architect who took over from Emmanuel Le Ray in 1932. His most famous works include the Odorico house and the Tomine building, but he is also responsible for the Oscar-Leroux school and the former Institute of Geology. In 1916 he joined the army and participated in the fighting as an artilleryman. In 1920 it became part of the new Regional School of Architecture. The city architect, Emmanuel Le Ray, noticed the young Lemoine and commissioned various works from him at a time of great activity for the workshop. Meanwhile, he also worked for the entrepreneur Roberto Novello for whom he designed the house plan in 1925. He obtained his architect's diploma on 6 June 1928 and, from 1 August, was appointed deputy architect of the city of Rennes. In 1951 he accepted a teaching position at the Regional School of Architecture, run by his long-time friend Albert Hec, teaching theory. He was also president of the architects' union of Ille-et-Vilaine and president of the Council of the Order in 1957. On behalf of the Municipality, in 1953 he carried out the expansion of the Faculty of Science and built or expanded numerous nursery and primary schools. He often used sandblasted concrete to embellish doors and openings. Sick, assisted by his daughter, drew up plans for new greenhouses in Thabor in 1956. He died on 11 September 1958, a year after receiving the Legion of Honour.
