Franz Lenhart (1898-1992) was born in Bad Haring, Austria, in 1898. He studied art in Vienna and Florence, where he moved in 1921. In Alto Adige he took a position as a drawing teacher at the Technical Institute of Merano. He is counted among the most important Italian art deco graphics and it is precisely his background and his style that distinguish him. He was very active in the late 1920s and 1930s as a graphic artist designing artwork, prints and posters as well as travel brochures and labels for clients in the Northern Italian Alps, particularly in Merano, Bolzano and Cortina d' Ampezzo.
In 1934 he worked as a graphic designer for shipping companies and managed to travel as far as Japan, creating commissioned portraits. He returned to Italy and from around 1930 to 1955 Lenhart was responsible for the creation of almost a hundred works of art, prints and posters depicting mountain themes. After that period, he concentrated on artistic painting which he practiced until his death in 1992.
