Rocco Lentini was born on 17 February 1858 in Palermo. His father, Giovanni, was a leading exponent of the Sicilian nineteenth century, decorator of noble palaces and set designer of the royal Carolino theater in Palermo. Lentini approached scenography and decoration by helping his father. Later, he frequented the studio of the landscape architect Francesco Lojacono. In 1877 he had the opportunity to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna thanks to a scholarship from the Municipality of Palermo. He stayed briefly in Naples, where he became interested in Neapolitan realism. He was a careful scholar and an exponent of nineteenth-century historicism and ranged freely from rococo to eighteenth-century antiquarian taste. His public commissions were of particular importance: between 1890 and 1891 he decorated the Palazzo delle Aquile, seat of the Municipality of Palermo, and in 1895 he worked on the Teatro Massimo. Lentini died in Venice on 20 November 1943.
