Joseph Levin Biography
Russian painter, illustrator and poet. After studying in St. Petersburg, he made a series of trips across Russia, participating in exhibitions in Saratov, Orenburg, Penza, where he won the prize for the people's university project. Finally, he settled in Chita, in eastern Siberia, where he dedicated himself to poetry and painting. In 1922, he left Russia and moved to Beijing. At the end of the twenties, he leaves for Paris; here, he works as an illustrator and exhibits at the Salon des Independents. In 1939, before the outbreak of the Second World War, as a Jew, he left France for the United States. In 1947, a personal exhibition of the painter was held in New York. In the following years Levin successfully spread his art throughout the United States and Europe. He was also a novelist and poet. His works are preserved in museums in Moscow, Leningrad, Beijing, Paris, Havana, New York and San Francisco.
