Giuseppe Augusto Levis Biography

Giuseppe Augusto Levis was born on 9 August 1873 in Chiomonte. He was a pupil of the painter Delleani, whose style he followed in the first period of his artistic career.
He mainly painted landscapes of the Biella Alps and the Susa Valley, depicting clearings, woods, waterfalls and rural homes.
In his mature years, with his solo show at the Permanente in Milan in 1909, he achieved a greater fullness of style, particularly in his works created in Libya in 1912. In 1913, he went to Russia and returned to his homeland at the time of the First World War.
During his career he exhibited his works in numerous Italian cities. He was a great collector and, by his will, his collection of 900 paintings was destined partly to the city of Racconigi and partly to Chiomonte, where today it is preserved in the GA Levis Art Gallery in the sixteenth century Palazzo Paleologo. The Caire villa was his home and his last studio, before he died in 1926.
