Kurt Lewy (1898-1963) was a painter, draftsman and enameller. During his career he also devoted himself to tapestry design.
Lewy studied at the Folkwangschule in Essen and from 1919 to 1923 at the Higher School of Applied Arts in Berlin. Immediately after the rise of Nazism, the Jewish artist was relieved of his duties. Two years later he fled Hitler's Germany and settled in Brussels. After the war, he began painting abstract geometric works and became a member of the Belgian "Abstract Art" group founded by Jo Delahaut in 1952.
His works are characterized by precise geometric shapes and bright, vibrant colors. The artist created his compositions through the use of lines, shapes and colors, following a rigorous geometric logic. His works are balanced but at the same time dynamic, thanks to the arrangement of shapes and colors.
He has exhibited in several exhibitions in Europe throughout his career, especially in Belgium, where in 2020 the exhibition “Kurt Lewy - Towards Abstraction” was held at the Jewish Museum in Brussels.
