Xiangyang Li Biography
Li Xiang Yang was born in Beijing in 1957. Since 1981 he has lived and worked in Rome. As an artist Li Xiang stands out for his singularity, because he pays little attention to the lines of development that the art system outlines for young artists, inviting them to follow them. After moving to the West, Li Xiang chose his language of reference in American painting of the 1950s. Although this choice may appear sensationally out of date, Li Xiang took the steps from there to create a painting of gestures, which flowed with immediacy and blindness from the heart, from the bowels and from the arm.
At the risk of falling into a learned academy of abstract expressionism, Li Xiang immediately began to go beyond the lesson, to exceed, to overflow. Thus, his pinks could be those of De Kooning, and the rhythm of the image that of Scialoja, his first Italian master. However, the excess of gesture, material and sign that he unloads on the canvas is his alone. The result is a gargantuan palette, spooned, spatulated, felt and manipulated.
