Liceu De Artes E Oficios Biography
The Liceu De Artes & Oficios was an institution founded in 1873 by a group of aristocrats belonging to the coffee elite, who, with the apparent aim of training qualified labor in anticipation of a possible future industrialization of Brazil, gave life to this school. However, seven years later, the institute was completely transformed, effectively becoming a crafts school. Occupying a building designed by Ramos de Azevedo, the same architect who also directed its construction, the institute adopted teaching models inspired by European schools of arts and crafts, focusing primarily on design, casting, carpentry, and other related fields. During the golden age of its production, the Liceu de Artes e Oficios saw the birth and marketing of numerous sofas, armchairs and sideboards made by young Brazilian designers. Due to the high level of craftsmanship within modern design, it is common for Liceu pieces to be (incorrectly) attributed to Joaquim Tenreiro.
