Charles Sillem Lidderdale (1830-1895) was born into a Scottish family living in St. Petersburg.
When Charles was 13, he moved with his family to England. In 1856, Charles submitted his first work of art to a competition and was admitted to the Royal Academy of Arts.
From 1856 to 1893, 36 of Lidderdale's paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy. He was a famous British genre painter and portraitist, specializing in the depiction of young women and children portrayed in rural landscapes. His most successful works were those of Spanish women and gypsies. The artist's pastoral female portraits were also highly appreciated by the public.
