Franck Ligtelijn was born in 1933, he joined the design team of the famous Dutch lighting manufacturer Raak in the early 1960s. He is best known in the design community for his role in creating the minimalist Globe 2000, which became Raak's most celebrated floor lamp and an icon of Dutch design. The simplicity of the high-quality materials, including a glass globe produced by the German glassmaker Peill & Putzler, made the Globe 2000 an extraordinary product. Ligtelijn went on to design a range of Globe lamps, including pendants and desk lamps to complement the floor lamp. Although it is likely that Ligtelijn designed other lamps for Raak, the overwhelming commercial and critical success of the Globe series often overshadows his other designs. Relatively little is known about Ligtelijn himself. However, the Globe series is not only an example of space age design, but remains sought after by vintage enthusiasts today, as it was in the Netherlands in the 1960s.
