Llewlyn Lloyd Biography

Llewelyn Lloyd was born in 1879 in Livorno.
He was initially self-taught by attending the studio of Guglielmo Micheli, a friend of Fattori, from 1894 to 1899. This allowed him to become friends with Oscar Ghiglia, Romiti, Natali and Modigliani. In 1897 he participated in the Florentine promoting society with the painting "Morning in Calambrone". A few years later he attended courses at the free nude school in Fattori. In those years he experimented with the pointillist technique, sharing it with his friends Discovolo and Lori. Some examples are the paintings "The Bridges of Manarola" from 1904, "Le Gramignaie" from 1906, and the triptych "Giardino in fiore" awarded in 1908 at the LXI Annual Exhibition of Fine Arts in Florence. In 1907 he visited the Island of Elba for the first time and the natural beauty of the landscape led him to return every year. The landscapes of Elba therefore became the main subject of his paintings ("Twilight on the Island of Elba" and "The Dead Chestnut" presented at the 1st Roman Secession in 1913).
In the 1920s he participated in numerous exhibitions in Italy and in 1929 he was commissioned, together with GA Sartorio and A. Pomi, to portray the warships of the Italian Navy. He embarked on the "Quarto" which took him to Spain, Portugal and Tripolitania. The works completed during this cruise were then exhibited at the III Maritime Art Exhibition in Rome. In 1929 he also published in Florence, with the publisher Nemi, the volume "The painting of the nineteenth century in Italy".
