Luigi Locatelli Biography

Luigi Locatelli (1904 - 1983), known as Bigi, was a painter, originally from Bergamo, belonging to a family of artists, among whom we remember his brother Romualdo - who tragically passed away in the Philippines - who still appears today as a renowned artist. There are no monographic studies on Locatelli. Son of Giovanni Battista Locatelli, he attended Ponziano Loverini's courses at the Carrara Academy with his cousin Romualdo Locatelli. In 1930, in the midst of a creative crisis, he moved to Paris with his brother Ferruccio Locatelli and Giacomo Manzù. He did not find his artistic streak again and after ten years he returned to Italy to settle in Bologna, where he worked on restoration. Due to his type of painting, he fits into the current of late Lombard Impressionism and also receives influences from Scapigliatura: in fact the artist is interested in the effects of light and color on the canvas, uses the brushstroke freely and constructs the figure with touches of color and chiaroscuro.
