Raffaello Locatelli Biography
Raffaello Locatelli (Bergamo, 1915 – Bergamo, 1984) was an Italian painter. He was born on December 9, 1915 into a family of painters and fresco painters. Ten years younger than his well-known older brother Romualdo, Raphael soon learned the art of drawing from his father Luigi. He trained first at the Fantoni School and then at the Carrara Academy in Bergamo. Present at the editions of the Bergamo Prize since 1939, he obtained one of the first official awards in 1946 at the '1st National Exhibition of Sacred Art', ex aequo with Aligi Sassu; subsequently his activity obtained various recognitions: the 'Premio Presidenza della Repubblica' and the 'Michetti Prize' in 1950, the first prize at the 'Premio Famiglia Artistica' (Milan, 1959), the first prize at the 'Concorso Nazionale Necchi' in 1960. In 1956, together with the artists Mario Cornali, Egidio Lazzarini, Trento Longaretti, Erminio Maffioletti, Giuseppe Milesi, Rinaldo Pigola, Luigi Scarpanti and Alberto Vitali, he was one of the founders of the Bergamo Group, a group which his cousin Orfeo Locatelli would also join almost immediately. . In France he approached Impressionism and his painting was linked to this style. Works by Raffaello Locatelli can be found in private collections in Italy, France, Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland, Mexico. One of his works is exhibited in the President Sukarno Collection in Jakarta, Indonesia.
