He was born into a family of three generations of painters and decorators, in whose workshop nine artists trained. The eldest son of the skilled fresco painter Luigi known as "Steenì II", he learned the art of restoration and decoration from his father, starting his artistic production with the wall decoration of vaults and naves of various churches in the Province of Bergamo. He perfected his art first at the Andrea Fantoni School of Applied Arts, and then, as a student of Ponziano Loverini at the Accademia Carrara. In 1939 he was in Indonesia, first in Jakarta and then in Bali, where he became friends with the Italian-Egyptian painter Emilio Ambron. The instability due to the Second World War then pushes Romualdo to Manila, in the Philippines. He made numerous friendships in diplomatic circles, which allowed him to exhibit in New York City in 1941. In 1943, due to the consequences of the war, the situation in the Philippines worsened: in the chaos that reigned in those days, Romualdo disappeared in still mysterious circumstances.Works by Romualdo Locatelli can be found in public and private collections all over the world, but it is above all in the East where he perhaps produced his best works, which is remembered as the "famous Romualdo", and obviously in his hometown, Bergamo, which in the years has dedicated several exhibitions to him, the last of which in 2003. In 2012 an exhibition on all three generations of Locatelli artists is planned in Bergamo, and a selection of around 20 works by Romualdo Locatelli will also be exhibited.
