Luigi Lombardi Biography

LUIGI LOMBARDI. Brescia, 15 September 1853 - Darfo, 23 June 1940. Luigi was born to Andrea and Ottavia Carrera, in S. Bartolomeo; first of six brothers. Her father was a bricklayer and her mother a seamstress. She lived a difficult youth, made even darker by her mother's death (1866). Luigi Lombardi attended the civic drawing school, under the guidance of Luigi Campini and in those courses he was a fellow student of Francesco Filippini with whom he formed a lifelong friendship. At twenty he deserves a two-year subsidy from the Municipality of Brescia from the Legato Brozzoni; at the exhibition of school essays in August 1875 he was amazed "at the progress achieved in such a short time"; shortly afterwards, on 20 October, the subsidy was confirmed until 1879 for him to attend the Brera Academy. In Milan he was a pupil of Giuseppe Bertini and deserved a silver medal for the landscape in the tests of 1876 and 1877. If the subsidies granted by Pietro Da Ponte to Lombardi and Filippini rewarded the innate talents of the two young men, from Milan Antonio Caini, secretary of the Academy , communicates to our Municipality excellent news about their studies marked by admirable assiduity and incensable behavior. These are the days of communion with the "small world" in which our Ghidoni, Gignous, Bazzaro and the slightly older Pellizza da Volpedo wander in the climate close to the Scapigliatura.
