Giovanni Lombardini Biography

Giovanni Lombardini was born in 1950 in Mulazzano di Coriano (Rimini). He completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino. In 1972, his work Shoes with grass became an image for the "I Manifesto", published by the Urbino Academy. In the same year he received the 2nd Prize from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs at the “Grand Concours International Musee 2000” in Luxembourg. He held his first solo exhibitions in Rimini (1980) and Trieste (1982). In the 1970s, the material presence of things and objects led his research along clearly poverty-stricken lines. From the first works with grass (1971-72), to the writings and soap stars (1973-74), up to the large pictorial surfaces, obtained by rubbing petals and blades of grass on canvas. The choice of materials is derived from cognition both on the primacy of natural phenomena and on the phenomenal structure of sensorial behaviors. Since the 1980s his research has tended to move towards more technological materials; therefore shiny and non-absorbent surfaces; and then manual casts of objects and people with painted tinfoil (1980-86), castings of copper and bronze paints on virgin x-ray plates (1987) and castings of cast iron and soap (1989). Lombardini's recent works, focused on light, color and reflection, arise from the discovery and experimental use of unusual materials: mordant colors and transparent glossy acrylic applied on formica, on board or on paper.
